Wax Carving

Learn traditional wax carving techniques and

create your own beautiful and unique silver ring.

No previous experience of jewellery making is needed and you will be guided through everything you need to know step-by-step, from measuring and sizing your ring to carving beautiful details and patterns. Will you choose simple flowing shapes or more intricate patterns? The choice is yours!

After the session you can choose to take your wax ring with you or have it sent for casting into solid sterling silver using the lost wax casting method. There is an extra cost for this - please see below.

If you usually wear reading glasses please remember to bring them with you. It would also be useful to bring photos and sketches of any ideas that you have, although examples and photos will be available for inspiration.

Keen to learn wax carving but don't wear rings? We can use the same skills to carve beautiful pendants or charms.

Is this topic a half day or full day's tuition?

That's up to you! A half day is enough time to carve a simple ring such as those shown above. However, if you'd like to carve a more complex ring such as a signet ring or would like to carve a ring and a pendant then a full day would be needed.

Is any previous experience needed?

No, none at all! I will take you through everything you need step by step. If you're already familiar with jewellery making however you will still learn new skills.

What are the material costs?

After your session the wax models will be sent off for casting. This uses the Lost Wax Casting method, which I will describe during your day. The cost of the wax you use during the day is covered by your tuition fee, but there is a cost for the casting. This varies according to the weight of your wax but as at July 2025 the costs are:
up to 1g of wax: £25
between 1g and 1.5g of wax: £35
between 1.5g and 2g of wax: £45
between 2g and 2.5g of wax (this would be quite a big ring!): £55

Casting takes up to three weeks.
Castings always require some cleaning up, and you can do this at home if you have the tools. If you would like me to finish your ring for you there is a cost of £20.
