Making The Most Of Your Rolling Mill

Discover how to use your rolling mill for texturing, recycling and more -

and how to look after it too!

Rolling mills are wonderful pieces of equipment, and a must-have in every jeweller's studio! I can teach you how to use a wide range of materials to texture silver sheet, how to change the profile of not just sheet but wire as well so that you can confidently recycle your scrap into new materials, and even how to use the mill to shape metal sheet into 3D forms using basic fold forming techniques.

A rolling mill is a big investment to make but, if looked after properly, it will last you a lifetime. So, perhaps most importantly, I will also teach you how to care for your rolling mill.

We will also cover the different types of rolling mills available and the advantages of each - perfect if you are still deciding which mill to invest in! There will be two rolling mills available for use in the studio - a blue "value" beginners rolling mill and a large Durston model.

Is this topic a half day or full day's tuition?

A half-day session is suitable for either learning how to texture, how to recycle or how to use the rolling mill for basic fold forming. In a full day we can cover more information about the rolling mill, or you can choose to combine a half-day rolling mill session with another half-day topic - please see the main private tuition page for other project ideas. I always cover how to care for your rolling mill, whether you choose a half or full day, as this is important!

Is any previous experience needed?

No previous experience is needed, although this topic is most useful for those who already make jewellery and want to get the best out of their rolling mill - or find out more before they invest in one!

What are the material costs?

The workshop fee does not include metals as everyone uses different amounts. Copper sheet is available for practicing texturing and fold forming, and silver sheet is available for any finished projects you'd like to do. Scrap metal is available for learning how to use the mill for recycling.

You are welcome to bring your own scrap to start recycling it, but it must be clean and free from any contaminants such as solder. Fresh casting grain and solder-free off cuts of sheet and wire are perfect.
