A Touch of Gold - Keum Boo Workshop - Saturday 8th February 2020
Ever since I made my first piece of jewellery using Keum Boo I have been fascinated by the possibilities of this technique, and by the fact that such a rich gold colour can be added to silver without breaking the bank! Keum Boo literally translates as "attached gold" and permanently bonds 24k gold to silver.
The workshop will teach you to produce two or three pieces of jewellery of your own using this beautiful technique at a saving of £55 on Keum Boo private tuition when you include the cost of the materials.
Topics covered include:
- Sawing, piercing, filing and sanding silver
- Preparing sterling silver through depletion gilding
- texturing silver sheet
- making and attaching bails and earwires
- and, of course, different methods of attaching the gold foil.
You will also be taught about the equipment required for carrying out Keum Boo work at home and will take information sheets away with you, together with any left over gold foil.
This tuition does not require any previous experience of silversmithing, but previous experience is useful if you wish to make a complicated piece - I can advise you on this if you email me before the workshop. All but the last two photos shown here are of students' work.
Only 8 places are available to ensure that everyone gets the help and attention they need. Under 16 year olds are welcome but will need to be accompanied by a paying adult.
Tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes are included in the workshop fee, but lunch is not provided.
Date and Venue
10am-4.30pm Saturday 8th February at The Sorting Office Studios, 37 Wells Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire. Full directions will be emailed.
The workshop fee includes 4cm by 4cm of sterling silver sheet, suitable for creating at least one piece of jewellery, plus a sheet of 24k gold worth £20. Any gold foil and silver sheet left at the end of the workshop is, of course, yours to take and use at home. The workshop fee is a saving of £55 compared to private Keum Boo tuition!
Tools and Equipment
The workshop fee includes use of all the tools and equipment needed. All workshops include worksheets to take home with you and discuss tools, equipment, materials and health and safety considerations.
Cancellations of workshop places and private tuition bookings within two weeks of the event will forfeit the workshop fee/private tuition deposit unless I am able to find someone to take your place. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend.
